ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s top civil and military leadership will gather today for an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) to confront the worsening regional crisis sparked by US airstrikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran.
The strikes, which Pakistan has sharply condemned, follow a wave of aggression from Israel and have thrust the region into deeper uncertainty.
The NSC, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, stands as Pakistan’s highest forum for security deliberations, bringing together the country’s most senior civilian and military figures.
Today’s session, called on an urgent basis , will see the attendance of key cabinet members, including the Defence Minister, Interior Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and Finance Minister, alongside the military’s top leadership, notably army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Just a day ago, the United States bombed Iran’s nuclear sites. Field Marshal Munir was in the US last week, where he met with President Donald Trump. Munir, fresh from that high-stakes encounter, is expected to brief the committee on what transpired during his discussions with Trump.
Pakistan has wasted no time in denouncing the US strikes, which it views as an escalation piled atop Israel’s “unprovoked and unjustified aggression” over the past eight days.
The NSC’s agenda will also include a detailed review of Pakistan’s internal security and border situation.
