PESHAWAR: Unidentified gunmen ambushed a returning police patrol in Pakistan’s Bajaur district on Wednesday evening, killing four officers and seriously wounding two others, authorities said.
The assault targeted the Ababeel Squad, an exclusive patrolling force, near the Nawai Kallay area around the time of iftar, Gul Zada, the station house officer at Khar police station, told local media. The squad had been on a routine patrol when the attackers opened fire, Zada said. Four officers died at the scene.
Bajaur police spokesperson Israr Khan provided additional details. The personnel were returning to the Bajaur police lines from the Inayat Kallay bazaar, their duty hours about to end, when the attack occurred, he said. The officers killed were identified as Yar Zada, Dawood Khan, Imran Khan and Siraj Khan. The wounded were Irshad Khan and Azizur Rehman. Zada said the injured policemen were taken immediately to the district headquarters hospital in Khar for treatment.
Khan said a police team led by senior officials rushed to the site and launched a search operation to hunt down the attackers, who had fled after the shooting. The violence in Bajaur came one day after seven police personnel were killed in two attacks elsewhere in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where law enforcers have increasingly come under attack in recent days.
On Tuesday in Kohat district, six law enforcement personnel, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Asad Mehmood, were killed in a terrorist attack on a police vehicle. A police officer said the DSP, an inspector and four constables died when their vehicle was ambushed near Shakardara Road while they were transporting two individuals for a court appearance. One of the two individuals being transported was also killed in the attack. The assailants later set the vehicle on fire.
In a separate incident that day, a constable was killed after unidentified men opened fire in the Mughal Khel village of Wana tehsil in Lower South Waziristan. On Monday, three Federal Constabulary men were killed when terrorists attacked rescue teams in the Karak district. Last week, a terrorist attack involving an explosives-laden vehicle on a checkpost in Bajaur district resulted in the deaths of 11 security personnel.
