PTI to move court over audio leaks

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Imran Khan on Monday said his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will
approach a court to establish the authenticity of the recently leaked audio recordings.

Khan called the audio leaks a serious breach of national security and alleged that the secure line at his residence was bugged during his tenure as prime minister.

“The audio leaks are a serious breach of national security as they call into question the entire security of the Prime Minister Office and the Prime Minister Home. As PM, the secure line at my residence was also bugged,” Khan said in a tweet.

“We intend to go to court to establish the authenticity of the leaks and then form a joint investigation team to probe what intel agency is behind the bugging and who leaked the mostly edited and doctored audio.”

Khan said “this is critical because sensitive security issues are and have been illegally recorded and subsequently hacked, implying that the confidentiality of Pakistan’s national security has been exposed globally”.

A slew of audio recordings of conversations between key government figures were leaked online from the PM’s Office, including discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and members of his cabinet.

On Friday, two audio recordings of former PM Khan surfaced. In one of them, Khan allegedly discussed horsetrading members of the Pakistan National Assembly ahead of his trust vote in April. In the other, he reportedly talked about the use of a US cipher to brand as traitors all those who would vote against him in the confidence poll.

Khan had earlier accused Pakistans ruling Pakistan Muslim League(N) of being behind the new game of fake audio.

PM Sharif ordered an investigation into the leaked audio conversations and called it a “major lapse.” He set up a committee to investigate the leaks and called for a review of cybersecurity at the prime minister’s and other government office.
