SCP orders police to file FIR on gun attack on Imran Khan within 24 hours

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) on Monday directed the Punjab police to register a first information report (FIR) of the gun attack on former prime minister Imran Khan within 24 hours.

The issue was raised at the hearing of a contempt plea filed by the interior ministry against Khan in another case.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial warned of taking suo motu notice if the FIR of the attack was not registered.

Khan, who was leading a protest march near Gujranwala, was wounded in both legs, in an assassination attack last week.

In a video leaked to television channels after the attack, a man who appears to be in custody says that he wanted to kill Khan and that he had acted alone.

“Imran Khan was leading people astray,” the man said. “I could not tolerate this. That is why I tried to kill him. I only tried to kill Imran Khan and no one else.”

However, the PTI chief accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior minister Rana Sanaullah and an army official Major-General Faisal Nasser of the assassination plot — and demanded their resignation.

A day earlier the ousted prime minister accused the Punjab Police of refusing to register an FIR against military official Major General Naseer to probe the officer’s alleged involvement in the assassination attempt.

“Punjab Police said they are ready to register FIR against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah but not against DG (C) ISI Faisal Naseer,” Khan told a news conference.

“I fully believe these three have done this (attack) through a conspiracy. It’s my right [to register a case]. I’m the leader of the biggest political party and ex-PM and if I can’t get his name in the FIR then I ask what [rights can be expected] for the nation and for the common man?”

PM Sharif demanded the setting up of a ‘full court commission’ by the Supreme Court to probe Khan’s allegations.
