ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tested positive for Covid-19, a day after returning from his trips to the UK and Egypt,  a minister said on Tuesday.

PM Sharif returned to Islamabad on Monday after first traveling to Egypt to attend COP27 on November 7 and then spent a few days in London to meet his elder brother and three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Sharif tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday after being unwell , Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said in a Twitter post.

Aurangzeb said the premier was feeling unwell for the past two days and took a Covid-19 test on Tuesday on the doctor’s advice, which returned positive.

“The public and the workers are requested to pray for the speedy recovery of the Prime Minister,” she said, appealing to workers and supporters of his political party – PML-N.

It was the third time that Prime Minister Sharif had tested positive for the virus; the first two times were in June 2020 and in January this year.

President Arif Alvi wished PM Sharif a quick recovery. Former president and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chair Asif Ali Zardari also prayed for his speedy recovery. “It is hoped that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will recover soon and serve the country and the nation,” he said.
