ISLAMABAD: At least 10 policemen were killed and six wounded when militants attacked a police station in the country’s northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province early on Monday, officials said.
The assailants, armed with grenades and heavy weapons, stormed the station in Daraban tehsil of Dera Ismail Khan district at around 3 am, police and local media said.
The police fought back and exchanged fire with the attackers, who fled under the cover of darkness.
The injured officers were taken to a nearby hospital, where some of them were in critical condition.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which came days before Pakistan is due to hold national elections amid a surge in violence across the country.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt for the militants, while a quick response force has arrived with reinforcements.
