PESHAWAR: The Awami National Party (ANP), a partner in the ruling Pakistan Democratic Front (PDM), has decided in principle to quit the alliance over broken promises, Independent Pakistan can report.
The decision to quit to the federal government came Thursday at a meeting of the party chaired by Aimal Wali Khan, where party leaders noted that none of the promises made to them before the vote of no-confidence had been fulfilled.
The final decision in this connection will be made when party central leadership comes together after Eid-ul-Azha for a meeting already summoned by Aimal Wali Khan. Sources close to the party say ANP senior leaders have already given the ANP president the authority to decide on the matter.
The sources said that neither any of the promises made with them were being fulfilled nor the government had shown the seriousness of purpose called for at this crucial juncture.
A stalwart of the party, Ameer Haider Khan Hoti said that the government should take immediate steps to stabilise the economy and provide relief to the people.
“We will not support a government that cannot serve the people”, he roared. “The ANP does not need a ministry or position to serve the people”.
Alluding the recent raises announced in pay and perks of various high officials, Hoti said if the government was serious in resolving the problems of the people, the sacrifice should start from parliament.
He added: “The government should stop taking perks and privileges amid the economic conditions if it is serious in steering country out of this crisis”.
