ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s star athlete Arshad Nadeem has secured a spot in the javelin throw final at the Asian Athletics Championship in Gumi, South Korea, with a remarkable throw of 86.34 meters on his first attempt on Friday.
Nadeem, competing in Group A, delivered the longest throw of the qualifying round, booking his place in the final scheduled for May 31.
Nadeem leads the 21-member field, followed by Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage with an 83.71 meters throw, and Japan’s Yuta Sakiyama with an 81.36 meters.
“Alhamdulillah qualified this morning for the final competition tomorrow afternoon [May 31] at 1:10pm PKT at the Asian Championships,” the Olympic champion posted on Instagram. “As always I would need your support and prayers.”
Fellow Pakistani athlete, Yasir Sultan, also advanced to the final with a throw of 76.07 meters. India’s Yash qualified as well, achieving a distance of 76.67 meters in his first attempt.
The performance reinforces Nadeem’s standing as one of the world’s top javelin throwers. His performance in South Korea follows a historic triumph at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he claimed gold with a record-breaking throw surpassing 90 meters, the sixth-longest in history.
That achievement earned him Pakistan’s highest civilian honor, the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, and triggered widespread celebrations across the country.
