ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Tuesday served a notice to former finance minister Senator Shaukat Tarin of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) for investigation into his leaked audio conversation with Taimoor Saleem Jhagra, finance minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Tarin has been summoned to the agency’s office in Islamabad on September 21.
“If you fail to appear, it will mean you have nothing to say in your defence,” the notice read.
In the alleged conversation, Tarin asked Jhagra to write a letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), saying the provincial government won’t be able to fulfil its conditions on surplus provincial funds for the release of a $1 billion loan tranche.
The coalition government had accused the PTI of attempting to push Pakistan toward a default.
Finance minister Miftah Ismail had asked Jhagra to resign and Tarin to quit politics for what he declared as an attempt to “sabotage” Pakistan’s interests.
Sources the FIA thoroughly reviewed the conversation of the Senator and provincial finance ministers for several days and then issued a notice.
