PM Sharif announces relief for power users

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday exempted electricity consumers utilising 300 units from Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) charges in August.

“This (exemption of 300 units) will cover 75 percent of the consumers across the country,” PM Sharif told lawmakers.

“Earlier, we gave an FPA exemption to the consumers using less than 200 units and bore the burden of Rs21 billion that covered 48 to 52 percent of power consumers. But I told my economic team that it was not enough… so today we have decided that the facility should be passed on to the consumers using a maximum of 300 units.”

There are around 30 million electricity consumers in Pakistan. The FPA is linked with the fluctuation in fuel prices in the international market.

Protest demonstrations against FPA and other taxes on the electricity bills that shocked most of the consumers erupted in many cities in the country this month. The protesters burnt the electricity bills and pledged not to deposit the payments until the immediate withdrawal of the FPA and other taxes.
