ISLAMABAD: A suicide bomber killed three soldiers and wounded three civilians near a security checkpoint in North Waziristan, a former militant stronghold on the Afghan border, the army said on Wednesday.
The blast occurred in Miran Shah, the main town in the district, as the bomber tried to target a checkpost but was intercepted by soldiers, the army’s media wing said in a statement.
“The attacker intended to target a checkpost of the security forces but a timely interception by soldiers on duty prevented a major catastrophe,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.
The dead soldiers were identified as Naib Subedar Sahib Khan, 41, Naik Muhammad Ibrahim, 40, and Sepoy Jehangir Khan, 24.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes amid a surge in violence in Pakistan following the Taliban takeover of neighboring Afghanistan in August 2021.
The Pakistani Taliban, an ally of the Afghan insurgents, has increased attacks on security forces and civilians in recent months. On Sunday, two army officers were killed in an ambush by militants in Balochistan province, which also borders Afghanistan.
