Top Russia panel discusses cheap oil, gas for Pakistan

The Russian delegation is in Pakistan for a meeting of the high-powered Pakistan-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.

ISLAMABAD: As the eighth session of the Pakistan-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation began in Islamabad on Wednesday, official sources the two sides are in talks over the purchase of oil and LNG from Russia at competitive prices.

According to the sources, on the first day, there were discussions at the level of experts, which are being held at the level of the Inter-Governmental Commission. The Russian delegation consists of 78-80 members.

As the three-day moot got underway on Wednesday, Secretary Economic Affairs Division (EAD) Dr Kazim Niaz made an opening statement on behalf of Pakistan.

The secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs said that Pakistan suffered a lot due to the devastating floods. He said Pakistan appreciates the support given by the international community in times of crisis.

Dr Niaz expressed his gratitude to the Russian government for its continuous cooperation at such a testing time. He said the purpose of the current session is to review existing areas of cooperation and explore new opportunities for deepening bilateral relations.

He said promoting economic trade and investment relations is Pakistan’s top priority.

Israfil Alizadeh – Deputy Director of the Department of Economic Development of the Ministry of the Russian Federation – made an opening statement on behalf of the Russian side.

Asserting that Russia values its relations with Pakistan, Alizade said there is ample scope to exploit the comparative advantage between Pakistan and Russia.

Cooperation in all sectors of the economy is at an excellent level and we intend to promote it further, he said, adding that there is a clear potential between the two economies that needs to be further tapped.
