Two separate attacks kill three security personnel in KP

ISLAMABAD: Three security personnel were killed and six others wounded in two separate attacks in Pakistan’s northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, officials said.

In the first incident, militants attacked a convoy of security forces in Kulachi tehsil of Dera Ismail Khan district, killing two soldiers and injuring three others.

“Militants attacked the convoy of security forces and elite force near Maddi area of Kulachi tehsil,” a local official said. “As a result, two soldiers were martyred and others injured.”

The martyred soldiers were identified as Havaldar Mohammad Shaukat and Sepoy Mohammad Imran, while the injured included Amjad, Ajmal, and Jahanzeb.

In the second incident, a constable was martyred, and three others were injured in an ambush on a police van in Lakki Marwat district.

“Armed terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on the police mobile van near Sayed Azam Petrol Pump, leaving police officer Nisar Ahmad dead,” a police spokesman said. “Three policemen, including Station House Officer (SHO) Shakir Khan, were wounded who were in stable condition at a district’s medical facility.”

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, but suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, or the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who have claimed several attacks in KP in recent months.

Pakistan has seen a spike in militant violence in its two western provinces, KP and Balochistan, since the TTP called off its fragile truce with the government in November 2022.

The latest deaths have brought the total number of police killings in ambushes and targeted attacks in the volatile province this year to 68, according to police.
