ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a summary from the Ministry of Defense regarding the appointment of a new chief of the Army Chief to replace the incumbent, Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, who is due to retire next week, official sources said Monday.

The prime minister’s pick for the new army chief is likely to be announced today, the source said, adding that the summary lists the names of five senior most senior three-stars of the army.

Separately, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that a decision has been made to announce the appointment of the new army chief before the protest announced by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In an interview, Rana Sanaullah belittled Khan’s long march by calling it a creeping march, and said it would be the smallest gathering in the history of PTI in Rawalpindi. He lambasted the ousted prime minister for trying to create a spectacle out of the appointment of a new army chief.

He however was confident Khan would fail, and said the process of the appointment of the army chief would be completed before the date announced by Khan for his protest at Islamabad. The interior minister said that it was necessary to reject Imran Khan’s action with full force, because otherwise there would be a long march after every 3 years.
