KARACHI: The Pakistan Navy successfully test-fired the indigenously developed Taimoor air-launched cruise missile on Tuesday, the military’s media wing announced, in what officials described as a significant demonstration of the service’s ability to detect, track and neutralize enemy vessels at extended ranges.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the live-fire test of the anti-ship weapon system validated the navy’s precision-strike capabilities and operational readiness in the conventional domain. The missile, designed and produced domestically, executed its mission with “exceptional precision,” the statement said .“Pakistan Navy has conducted successful live weapon firing of Taimoor air-launched cruise missile — an indigenously developed Anti-Ship Weapon System — in a powerful demonstration of precision strike capability and operational readiness,” the ISPR said in a statement.
The test, conducted in the north Arabian Sea, underscored Pakistan’s push to strengthen its maritime defenses in a region where naval competition has intensified, particularly in the Arabian Sea and the broader Indian Ocean. Pakistani officials have framed such exercises as essential to safeguarding the country’s sea lanes and sovereign waters while reducing reliance on imported weapons systems.
The ISPR described the firing as “a pivotal elevation of national defence capability” that has strengthened the armed forces’ “multi-dimensional coordinated strike posture and capabilities in the conventional domain.” It added that the Taimoor system enables the navy to engage sea-based threats decisively over long distances, forming part of a broader effort to enhance conventional deterrence. “Pakistan Navy stands resolute in its commitment to safeguard the nation’s maritime interests and sovereign waters,” the statement said.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the chief of defence forces and the service chiefs had all praised the scientists and engineers responsible for the milestone. In a separate statement released by the Ministry of Interior, Naqvi congratulated the nation and reiterated the navy’s dedication to protecting maritime borders.
The Taimoor test comes amid a series of recent naval exercises that highlight Pakistan’s focus on indigenous weaponry. On April 16, the navy successfully fired a locally developed anti-ship ballistic missile at extended-range targets. In January, during a comprehensive exercise in the north Arabian Sea, the service test-fired a surface-to-air missile as part of a larger drill to refine multi-domain operations.
Military analysts in Islamabad have noted that such tests reflect Pakistan’s long-term strategy to build self-reliance in defense production. The Taimoor program, in particular, is seen as advancing the navy’s capacity to operate effectively in contested waters without depending on foreign suppliers for critical strike systems.
