ISLAMABAD: The people and government of Pakistan stand ready to extend all possible support to ameliorate the suffering of our Afghan brethren in this difficult time, a foreign office spokesperson has said.

Afghanistan has been hit by flash floods and a devastating earthquake in quick succession, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The deadliest to hit Afghanistan in two decades, the earthquake left more than 1000 people dead and many more injured.

The spokesperson extended Pakistan’s deepest condolences and sympathies to the brotherly people of Afghanistan over the loss of precious lives and damage to property caused by the tragic earthquake in Paktika province of Afghanistan and its adjoining areas, and torrential floods in various provinces across the country.

On directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan dispatched a large consignment of relief goods to Afghanistan on June 22. On June 23, the PM held a telephonic conversation with Acting Prime Minister of the Interim Afghan Government, Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund to offer condolences and prayers for the departed souls and wished speedy recovery for the injured.
