ISLAMABAD: It seems the respite from extreme heat brought to Pakistan by the sketchy showers accompanying dust-thunderstorms over much of the country during the Eid holiday was a gift for the occasion: A severe heatwave is set to his Pakistan right after Eid.
Monster daytime temperatures are expected next week after a spokesperson for the National Weather Forecasting Centre here Friday predicted “severe heat wave conditions” for the period.
“Met Office informed that high pressure is likely to grip upper atmosphere from Sunday [May 8]”, the spokesperson said in a statement.
In upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, these conditions are likely to push day temperatures a staggering 07-09°C above the normal levels, the statement said.
Slightly lower but still extreme boost is likely in Upper and Central Sindh, Central and South Punjab and parts of Balochistan – with day temperatures expected to soar to 06-08°C above normal levels.
“Very hot and dry weather may cause water stress on water reservoirs, crops, vegetable and orchards”, the statement said. “High temperature may cause increased energy demand, [and … may increase the base flow in the rivers during the next week.”
The spokesperson advised farmers to take into account the extreme weather conditions likely to prevail in the country when managing crop irrigation.
They advised the general public to limit or avoid exposure to direct sunlight and remain hydrated. “Judicious use of water is requested in all aspects of life.”
