Energy minister eager to expedite Thar coal power project

Khurram Dastgir Khan hopes the project will bring much needed employment opportunities to the locals of the region as well as affordable electricity to the nation.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Energy Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan Friday promised measures to help speed up the Thar Coal Block One power generation project, reports coming from Tharparkar say.

The Minister visited Thar Coal Block One Power Generation Company in Tehsil Islamkot of Tharparkar district, a ministry statement in Islamabad said. He reviewed the ongoing work on the company’s boiler.

“He appreciated the ongoing work on the Thar Coal Block One project and also emphasized on making the project functional as soon as possible”, it said.

Sino Sindh Resources Private Limited and Thar Coal Block One Power Plant Power Generation Company Chairman Meng Donghai gave a detailed briefing to the Federal Minister about the ongoing work on Block One, the ministry said.

“CEO Shanghai Electronics also pointed out the problems and slow pace in the completion of the project”, the statement said.

“The Federal Minister assured his full cooperation in solving all the problems. He said that Thar has become an important centre of Pakistan in the energy sector.”

On the occasion of the visit to the plant, the chairman of the Chinese company also presented a commemorative shield to the federal energy minister.

Also present on the occasions were Joint Secretary Ministry of Energy Salman Qayyum, Managing Director PPIB Shahjahan Mirza, Director General Coal PPIB Ali Nawaz, Chinese company CEO Mining Lee and Deputy CEO Mining Chaudhry Qayyum.

Talking to media persons at the airport, Khurram Dastgir said that the project promises a bright future for the Thar Desert. It was said that employment for the locals will increase through the Thar coal project.

He added that the sufferings of the people of Thar were at an end no that their present generation was more educated and employed than the previous generations of Thar.
