ISLAMABAD: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has sent for former chairman National Accountability Board (NAB) Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal after one Tayyaba Gul accused him of harassing her, it is learnt.
The accountability agency’s ex-boss has been directed to produce himself before the committee on Thursday (today).
The PAC also touched on human rights activist Amina Masood Janjua’s allegations against the former NAB chairman with regard to harassment of women visiting the missing persons commission headed by Justice (retd) Iqbal.
Speaking during a talk show on a TV news channel, Amina, who heads Defence for Human Rights, alleged that when the wife of a missing person appeared before the commission for missing persons to discuss the disappearance of her spouse, the ex-chief of NAB said to her: “You are so beautiful. Why do you need a husband?”
Noor Alam Khan, the chairman PAC, said the woman (Amina) in the talk show had levelled allegations against the head of a high-level commission. Khan said anyone involved in harassment of women would not be allowed to get away with it .
Many incidents of harassment had been reported in which a chief of an institution tried to abuse his powers to exploit powerless victims, which was highly unfortunate, he claimed, adding, such condemnable conduct would not be accepted and befitting action was bound to follow.
It is interesting to note that the ex-chief NAB, in a letter to the PAC, refused to appear before the committee on Thursday, saying he was unavailable because of the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
The PAC chief, trashing the lame excuses of the former NAB boss, directed NAB officials to tell the accused to comply with the PAC summons without fail.
