KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari has tested positive for Covid-19 and is in isolation, the presidency said on Wednesday, adding that his condition is improving under medical supervision.

Zardari, 69, was admitted to a private hospital in Karachi on Tuesday after arriving from Nawabshah, where he had offered Eidul Fitr prayers.

His physician, Dr. Asim Hussain, confirmed the diagnosis after conducting multiple tests and recommended isolation.

President Zardari had been hospitalised in Karachi on Tuesday after being brought over from Nawabshah, where he had offered Eidul Fitr prayers.

“The president is suffering from coronavirus and he has been advised to remain in isolation at this time,” Dr Hussain said. “A team of experts is taking care of the president and his condition is improving.”

Hussain said that the president was receiving medical care from infectious disease specialists at a private hospital.

“Meetings with Zardari have been banned to limit exposure and a the medical team is monitoring him closely, with regular tests to track his condition” Hussain added. “The medical team is ensuring round-the-clock observation to manage his condition effectively.”

The President is no stranger to the virus, having tested positive in July 2022 with only mild symptoms at the time.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon dismissed rumors that the president had been flown to Dubai for treatment. “Reports of President Asif Ali Zardari being shifted to Dubai are inaccurate,” Memon posted on X early Wednesday. “His health is improving, and Inshallah, he will be fine very soon.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over the president’s health and prayed for his quick recovery. The premier issued instructions to ensure the best medical facilities were provided to Zardari. Sharif had earlier contacted the president to enquire about his condition and wish him a speedy recovery.

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also reached out to Zardari, expressing his best wishes. “The entire nation’s prayers are with you,” he said.
