KARACHI: Thieves broke into Karachi’s historic Frere Hall during the Ashura holidays, making off with five World War II memorial shields and other valuables, police and local media reported on Saturday.
The burglary, which occurred at one of Karachi’s most storied landmarks, was discovered on July 7 when employees returned to the office after the religious holiday.
According to a first information report (FIR) filed with the Artillery Maidan police station, the office had been closed since 10 p.m. on July 4. When it reopened at 9 a.m. three days later, staff found the rear window shattered and several items missing.
“The suspects have stolen a DVD player, one speaker, five World War II memorial shields and a cable of precious shield copper,” the FIR stated, filed under Section 380 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which covers theft in a dwelling. The complainant, the deputy director of the KMC Parks Department, alleged that unidentified burglars broke the window to gain entry during the closure.
South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza said police have identified a suspect and are working to bring him in for questioning. “A contractor, under whose supervision the stolen items were kept in the room, has also been called for investigation,” Raza added.
He noted that the KMC Parks Department has yet to provide additional details, though the complainant promised to visit police on Monday with more information. “Concerted efforts are underway to arrest the suspect and recover the antiques.”
Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage for clues and have begun checking the local scrap market within the Frere police jurisdiction for traces of the stolen goods. “A breakthrough in the case is expected very soon,” he said.
Frere Hall, completed in 1865, stands as a symbol of Karachi’s colonial past and cultural heritage. Last year, it underwent a meticulous restoration funded by the United States, a project that underscored its significance as a historical treasure.
Karachi, Pakistan’s bustling economic hub, has long grappled with crime. Robberies are a persistent problem, with incidents ranging from petty thefts to brazen heists.
