ISLAMABAD: One of Pakistan’s most prominent television news networks suffered a security breach on Sunday night when unidentified actors hijacked its live satellite transmission and briefly replaced regular programming with subversive content.
Viewers in several regions reported that the Geo News channel suddenly disappeared from their screens, giving way to a notice that the service was unavailable. Moments later an image appeared showing English and later Urdu text set against a backdrop of an explosion and the Pakistani flag.
The channel, which transmits via the PAKSAT communications satellite, had already been facing repeated hacking attempts for the previous 24 hours, its management said, and had experienced continuous disruptions for some time. In a statement, Geo News described the incident as the display of an “inappropriate message” on its screen and insisted it had nothing to do with the channel itself. It urged the authorities to take immediate notice, act swiftly and bring those responsible to justice.
The breach appeared confined to the satellite feed. Geo News continued to broadcast normally on digital platforms and other distribution networks, and its website remained unaffected. The interruption lasted only a few minutes before engineers restored the regular signal.
Local media reported that technical staff at the channel began an immediate investigation into how the intrusion occurred, focusing on possible weaknesses in the satellite uplink or transmission chain. Media technology specialists pointed to classic tactics of signal interference or frequency override – methods long associated with satellite hijacking – as the most likely route taken by the unknown actors.
Such incidents remain relatively rare in Pakistan but carry obvious implications for the security of broadcast infrastructure and the wider flow of public information. Geo News is one of the country’s leading mainstream broadcasters, and the episode quickly drew attention to the vulnerability of even well-established networks to external interference.
