ECC approves hike in prices of 49 medicines

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet on Friday approved a hike in prices of 49 medicines, while also approving a grant of more than Rs21.95 billion for dealing with natural calamities and other projects.

The ECC, which was chaired by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, met in Islamabad and considered a summary of the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. The summary proposed an increase in the maximum retail price (MRP) of 49 new drugs, which are being introduced in Pakistan for the first time.

The ECC approved the summary after a detailed discussion, and the new MRPs will come into effect from June 7.

The ECC also approved a grant of Rs12 billion for the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to procure relief items to restock/replenish its reserves. The grant will be used to purchase food, water, tents, blankets, and other essential items in case of a natural disaster.

The ECC also approved a grant of Rs9.5 billion for the Ministry of Communications to issue a government guarantee for the construction of the Hyderabad-Sukkur motorway. The motorway is being constructed on a build-operate-transfer basis, and the government guarantee will help to attract investors.

The ECC approved a grant of Rs66.336 million for the construction of a Frontier Constabulary Training Center in Michni, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The training center will help to improve the capacity of the Frontier Constabulary to respond to security threats.

In the meeting, a technical supplementary grant of Rs839.1 million was approved for the Ministry of Aviation to fund the New Gwadar International Airport project.

Additional grants were also approved, including Rs700 million for the establishment of a FATA Levies center in Peshawar’s Shaks area and Rs470 million for the Ministry of Interior to compensate civil armed forces serving in UN peacekeeping missions.

Other grants include Rs60 million and Rs340 million for the Ministry of Interior, Rs40 million for families affected by a terrorist incident in Swat, Rs9 billion for the Jamshoro Coal Fired Power Project, and Rs40 million for the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
