ISLAMABAD: Former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa was admitted to an intensive care unit after suffering a head injury in a fall at his home, family sources said on Wednesday, adding that he was stable and out of danger.
Bajwa, 65, slipped in the bathroom of his residence at around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday and was taken to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) for treatment, according to the sources. He sustained multiple injuries, including to his head, and was placed in the hospital’s intensive care unit, though the full extent of the injuries was not immediately clear.
In a video message posted on social media, Bajwa’s brother-in-law, Naeem Ghumman, said the former army chief was barefoot when he slipped and suffered a head injury. Ghumman added that nothing suspicious came up following his medical examination, and all necessary tests were conducted. The family member stated that Bajwa is “100 per cent out of danger”.
Bajwa served as the 10th chief of army staff from Nov. 29, 2016, to Nov. 29, 2022, with an extension to his tenure granted in 2019 . Prior to his appointment as chief, he held the position of inspector general of training and evaluation at the General Headquarters (GHQ). He also served as a general staff officer in the 10 Corps as a lieutenant colonel
.Bajwa commanded a brigade with a United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo and later served as commandant of the Infantry School in Quetta. He belongs to the infantry’s Baloch Regiment, which has produced three previous army chiefs: Yahya Khan, Mirza Aslam Beg and Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. Since retiring in late 2022, Bajwa has largely stayed out of the public eye.
