LHC top judge summons meeting over alleged ISI coercion

By Staff Reporter

Lahore: The Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC), Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmed Khan has summoned an emergency meeting of the court’s judges to address allegations of interference in the judiciary by the country’s powerful intelligence apparatus.

The meeting, scheduled for April 22, comes after six judges of the Islamabad High Court wrote a letter to the Supreme Judicial Council detailing instances of alleged interference, including attempts to pressure judges through abduction and torture of their relatives and secret surveillance inside their homes.

The judges alleged that despite assurances from the Islamabad High Court chief justice, the interference continued, including the abduction of a judge’s brother-in-law by armed men claiming to be ISI operatives.

The emergency meeting of the Lahore High Court judges will consider how to protect judicial independence and establish a mechanism to hold accountable those who undermine it.
