ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s weather department warned of urban floods in several cities as it forecast monsoon rains and hailstorms from July 3 to 8.
The advisory urged local administrations to stay alert and said moist currents from the Arabian Sea and a westerly wave would bring rain and thunderstorms to almost all urban centers and other areas.
“The moist currents from the Arabian Sea are likely to penetrate the upper parts of the country and a westerly wave is also likely to enter the region,” the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said in an advisory issued on Sunday.
The advisory said Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Balochistan would see rain and thunderstorms from July 4 to 7.
It said heavy rain could cause flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore and trigger landslides in hilly regions.
It also warned of flash floods in D.G. Khan and northeast Balochistan from July 6 to 8.
From July 7 to 8, rain is expected in Sukkur, Jacobabad, Ghotki, Shaheed Benazirabad, Larkana, Mithi, Chhor, Padidan, Nagarparkar, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar, Mirpur Khas, Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, and Karachi.
Farmers and tourists were advised to plan activities according to the weather forecast.
The Federal Flood Commission also said northern catchments of all major rivers could see rain in the next week, which could result in flash flooding in some areas.
Last month, about 30 people died in rain-related incidents in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Heavy rains and hailstorms also disrupted life and caused damage in Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan.
