ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has shipped its first batch of rare earth elements and other critical minerals to the US, marking a key step in a $500 million deal aimed at bolstering economic ties and integrating the South Asian nation into global supply chains for materials vital to defence and technology.
The consignment, prepared in collaboration with Pakistan’s Frontier Works Organisation and delivered to US Strategic Metals, includes antimony, copper concentrate and rare earth elements such as neodymium and praseodymium, according to a statement from the American company.
Officials in Washington view the move as a pathway for Pakistan to join the international critical minerals market, a sector increasingly central to industrial and national security interests. The shipment follows a memorandum of understanding signed in September between USSM and the FWO at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad, as detailed by the US embassy there. The accord sets out a framework for cooperation across the mineral value chain, encompassing exploration, beneficiation, concentrate production and the eventual setup of refineries within Pakistan.

For Pakistan, the pact represents an entry point into the lucrative global critical minerals economy, potentially unlocking billions in revenue, generating jobs and facilitating technology transfers. The country’s untapped mineral resources are valued at around $6 trillion, ranking it among the world’s most resource-endowed nations.
On the US side, the arrangement provides access to essential raw materials while helping to diversify away from dominant suppliers that control much of the global market.
USSM described the delivery as “a milestone in the Pakistan–US strategic partnership,” emphasising that the MoU “establishes a roadmap for cooperation across the entire mineral value chain — from exploration and processing to the establishment of refineries inside Pakistan.” “We see this as the first step in our exciting journey together with the Frontier Works Organization of Pakistan to provide critical minerals to the United States and bolster economic trade and friendship between our two countries,” USSM Chief Executive Officer Stacy W. Hastie said.
