ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza, including the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, which it called a “deliberate conspiracy” to sabotage peace efforts.
The resolution, presented by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, denounced “atrocities by Israel on Palestinians” that have caused “immense suffering and loss of near 40,000 innocent lives”.
Haniyeh and a bodyguard were killed in the pre-dawn attack on their accommodation in Tehran early on Wednesday. He had traveled to Iran to attend Tuesday’s swearing-in of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
“[Haniyeh’s killing had] added to the angst and grief, and such incidents are seen as deliberate conspiracies to sabotage efforts to stop the ongoing oppression and brutality against Palestinians and to establish peace in the region,” the resolution read.
“Atrocities by Israel on Palestinians have escalated, causing immense suffering and loss of over 40,000 innocent lives so far, including women and children”.
The resolution called on the international community to take “collective action” to halt Israel’s oppression and brutalities and deliver justice to the Palestinian people.
“This house calls for the immediate admission of the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations,” the resolution added.
Pakistan observed a nationwide day of mourning on Friday to condemn Israeli actions in Palestine and express solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif termed Haniyeh’s assassination a “huge blow to peace efforts” and condemned the “Zionist state” for committing “crimes” that must be punished.
“While strongly condemning the killing of martyr Ismail Haniyeh on behalf of Pakistan’s government and its people, we extend our condolences to the martyr’s family and the Palestinian people,” Sharif said. “Whoever was involved in this incident should be brought before the law.”
Sharif, parliamentarians and hundreds of thousands of people on Friday offered funeral prayers in absentia for slain Hamas chief Sharif along with lawmakers offered prayers at Parliament House in Islamabad, which were broadcast live by the state television.
