PM Sharif’s party decides to get tough on hecklers

ISLAMABAD: The party of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided not to let any opposition hecklers go scot-free in future, well placed sources told Independent Pakistan Tuesday.

Headed by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) has prioritised what it calls moral high ground up until now, often refusing to take action or press charges against unruly activists of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The sustained heckling and harassment experienced by Information Minister, Maryam Aurangzeb in Central London recently was no different, with the Minister stoically bearing up to the abuse, refusing to call the police.

That changes now. The new playbook calls for immediate and strict legal action against any hecklers with a view to discouraging such attacks.

According to party sources, a secret directive has been issued to party officials and members of Parliament, including women.

The directive says if any opposition political party worker misbehaves, heckles, hoots, or obstructs assembly members or party officials, he should be dealt with strictly on the spot.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior is gearing to take action against the unruly band of overseas Pakistanis who recently heckled and harassed Information Minister, Maryam Aurangzeb in Central London.

The Ministry has zeroed in on the identities of the 14 individuals involved in harassment, four of them women and ten men, well placed sources told Independent Pakistan.

A decision has been taken to cancel the character certificates issued to these persons by the Ministry of Interior and various police officers from Pakistan.

Also under consideration is the cancellation of their NICOP and passports.
