PTI to announce plans to dissolve provincial assemblies on December 17

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan will hold a public gathering on December 17 to announce his plan of dissolving two provincial assemblies ruled by his party.

Khan’s PTI has governments in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as well as in Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. It has lawmakers in the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies also. The party lawmakers had already resigned from the National Assembly but the resignations of all lawmakers were not accepted.

“The law says that as soon as assemblies are dissolved, elections should be held within 90 days. So on December 17, I will give the date and after that 70 percent of the country will go into election mode,” Khan said in a televised speech.

Former premier said he had “completed consultations with the party and we have decided that in a gathering at Lahore’s Liberty Chowk, I will give my nation the date for the dissolution of the KP and Punjab assemblies”.

The former premier said that the dissolution of assemblies would pave the way for elections.

“Logically, if elections are held in 70 percent of the country […] then they might just hold general elections,” Khan said.

Khan claimed that the government was waiting for “round three of looting the country” and was “in no mood for elections” due to the fear of losing.

“But it is our misfortune that criminals are sitting (in the government) and they don’t care about the country.”

The party has planned to hold simultaneous rallies at all divisional headquarters on December 17 where the party chief’s address will be broadcast through a video link.

Khan’s party will hold rallies under the ‘Election karao, mulk bachao’ campaign from Friday, and his ‘final’ plan of dissolving Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies will be announced during the rally on Saturday.

Ousted from the office of prime minister via a parliamentary vote in April, Khan has, since, refused to recognize the coalition government of Prime Minister Sharif and accuses it of conspiring with the military establishment and the US for his removal.

The country is facing a political crisis with ousted prime minister Khan demanding that the government announce early general elections and Prime Minister Sharif rejecting his plea for snap polls.
