ISLAMABAD: Law enforcement agencies have detained six employees of Adiala jail, including three women, for allegedly facilitating former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated for over a year on various charges, local TV channels reported on Tuesday.
The arrested employees, who were taken into custody for questioning, comprise a sweeper, two lady wardens, and three officials responsible for monitoring surveillance cameras within the jail premises.
Authorities confiscated their cell phones. The detained officials are suspected of being part of a network aiding the former premier. The network allegedly facilitated message delivery and other forms of assistance to Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, who is also incarcerated.
The arrests follow the detention of the former deputy superintendent of Adiala jail, Muhammad Akram, on August 14, for allegedly secretly conveying Khan’s messages outside the prison facility.
Assistant Nazir and former Deputy Superintendent Zafar, close associates of Akram, are also under scrutiny. Akram allegedly facilitated communication for Khan, maintaining close ties with his party leader Zulfi Bukhari in London and a former Punjab minister.
Akram was removed from his post on June 20 and replaced by Deputy Superintendent Judicial Tahir Siddique Shah as the security supervisor of Khan.
Evidence of mobile phones used for WhatsApp communication on numbers linked to three European countries has been found, a newspaper reported.
“Since August 14, a total of 16 employees have been questioned in connection with these allegations, with more employees likely to be questioned in the coming days.”
Khan, 71, has been in prison since August last year, facing multiple cases, including treason, terrorism, and corruption.
