ISLAMABAD: The government on Wednesday appointed Rashid Mahmood Langrial as the new chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), replacing Malik Amjed Zubair Tiwana who sought early retirement, a notification said.
Langrial, a senior civil servant, was transferred from his current post as Secretary of the Power Division, according to the notification. He will take charge with immediate effect.
“Mr. Rashid Mahmood, a BS-21 officer of Pakistan Administrative Service, presently posted as Secretary, Power Division, under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act, 1973, is transferred and posted as Chairman, Federal Board of Revenue, under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act, 1973, with immediate effect and until further orders,” the notification read.
Tiwana, who was appointed in August 2023, had faced criticism over issues including digitization and a rift between the Inland Revenue Service and Customs groups. He sought early retirement from service, effective August 15, six months before reaching superannuation age.
Langrial, an alumnus of Harvard Kennedy School, has authored a book on women’s socioeconomic conditions.
The new chairman faces challenges, including addressing criticism over digitization and bifurcation between IRS and Customs groups, issues that dogged his predecessor’s tenure.
