Pakistan launches first hyperspectral satellite from China to boost climate, farm monitoring

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan achieved a significant milestone in its space program on Sunday with the successful launch of its first hyperspectral satellite from a launch center in China, a development that officials said would enhance the country’s capabilities in agriculture, environmental monitoring and disaster response amid growing climate challenges.

The satellite, known as HS-1, was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) said in a statement. The agency described the event as “a breakthrough achievement” that would position Pakistan as an emerging leader in space technology for sustainable development.

Hyperspectral imaging, the technology at the core of HS-1, represents an advanced form of satellite photography that captures images across hundreds of narrow spectral bands, allowing for the detection of subtle differences in light that are invisible to the human eye or standard satellite cameras, which typically record only a few colors like red, green and blue. This capability, detailed in a study published in the Journal of Computational Intelligence and Neuroscience, enables precise analysis of Earth’s surface features.

In its statement, Suparco said the satellite was “engineered to capture ultra-precise hyperspectral imagery across hundreds of narrow spectral bands, offering unprecedented resolution for the analysis of land, vegetation, water, and urban features.” The agency added that the technology would “fundamentally transform Pakistan’s capacity in precision agriculture, rigorous environmental monitoring, urban planning, and proactive disaster management.”

Suparco emphasised the satellite’s potential to “empower the nation to precisely map crop vitality, soil moisture, and water quality, while rigorously tracking deforestation, pollution, and glacial melt.” It would also “enhance early warning systems and post-disaster assessments for catastrophic events like floods and landslides, especially across the northern regions.”

The satellite is expected to support development projects, including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, by “preemptively identifying geo-hazard risks and guiding sustainable infrastructure development.”

Muhammad Yousaf Khan, the chairman of Suparco, “expressed profound gratitude for the Government of Pakistan’s support in bringing this pivotal national project to fruition,” the statement said. “The data from the Hyperspectral Satellite is poised to revolutionise agricultural productivity, bolster climate resilience, and enable optimised management of the country’s vital natural resources,” Khan said.

Mushtaque Hussain Soomro, the project director for HS-1, stressed that the satellite “signals a definitive leap in Pakistan’s ambitious space roadmap, positioning the nation as an emerging leader in space technology for sustainable development.” He also hailed the mission team’s collective dedication and technical brilliance.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a statement from his office, expressed appreciation for the Pakistani engineers and scientists involved in the launch. “The cooperation between Pakistan and China in space research, like in other sectors, is exemplary and of key importance,” he said. “We are grateful to our great and long-standing friend and strategic partner, China, for this exemplary collaboration.” “The hearts of Pakistanis beat with the Chinese people and leadership,” the prime minister added.

Sharif noted that the satellite would aid research into environmental changes and geographical variations. “This progress will prove to be an important milestone in combating the harmful effects of climate change,” he said. “The satellite will significantly increase national capabilities in areas such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, urban planning and disaster management.”

Last month, a senior Suparco official said the agency was integrating space-based applications into its disaster risk management framework, “paving a path anchored in science and international collaboration to better prepare for natural calamities.” In August, Pakistan launched a remote sensing satellite from a Chinese launch center, aimed at strengthening agricultural monitoring and disaster management, among other capabilities, according to a Foreign Office statement. A similar remote sensing satellite was launched in July, with the Foreign Ministry noting its role in bolstering those same areas.
