ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has written separate letters to the governors of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces, laying down the way forward for the conduct of elections to the two provincial assemblies within the timeframe given in the Constitution.

In the letter sent to Governor Punjab, the ECP has proposed to fix date between April 09 to 13 for holding polls. Governor KP has been asked to fix a date between April 15 to 17 for the election.

The letter, written by Secretary ECP Umar Hamid, says the Punjab Assembly was dissolved on January 14 while KP assembly was dissolved on January 18. It is binding on the respective provincial governor to give a date for holding polls within 90 days of dissolution of assembly.

It has been said in the letter that 90 days of Punjab assembly start from January 14. This means no date can be set after April 13 for Punjab assembly polls. The 90-day period for the KP assembly start from January 18, wherefor the date for holding polls in respect of the KP assembly cannot be set after April 17.

The letter informs the respective governors that the Commission needs 54 days to complete an election program.
