ISLAMABAD: The government increased gasoline and diesel prices for the next fortnight, tracking swings in the international crude market.
The Finance Ministry announced late Friday that petrol prices will rise Rs2.43 a liter to Rs265.45, while high-speed diesel, used in trucks, buses and farm machinery, advances Rs3.02 to Rs278.44 a liter.
The changes take effect immediately and stem from Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority calculations. Diesel price gains typically feed through to food costs, given its role in heavy transport and agriculture. Petrol mainly affects private cars, rickshaws and motorcycles.
In a counter-move, the regulator trimmed liquefied petroleum gas by Rs5.88 a kilogram, or 2.83%, to Rs201.60. An 11.8-kilogram domestic cylinder drops Rs69.44 to Rs2,378.89.
All petroleum products remain exempt from general sales tax. Still, the government pockets roughly Rs99 a liter in levies on gasoline and diesel—Rs80.52 on gasoline and high-octane grades, Rs79.50 on diesel—plus a climate levy. Customs duties add Rs17 to Rs18 a liter, with another Rs17 going to oil companies and dealers as margins.
Monthly gasoline and diesel demand ranges from 700,000 to 800,000 tons, dwarfing kerosene’s 10,000 tons. Petroleum-levy collections reached Rs1.161 trillion in fiscal 2025; this year’s budget aims for Rs1.47 trillion, a 27% jump. LPG carries Rs37,342 a ton in GST and levies.
