ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif landed in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday for a three-day official visit aimed at deepening economic and strategic bonds with Malaysia, a key partner in the Muslim world that has seen Pakistan’s investments swell to nearly $400 million this year.
Sharif touched down at Kuala Lumpur’s Banga Raya International Airport, where he was greeted by Malaysia’s minister of information and communications alongside Pakistan’s high commissioner to the country, according to state broadcaster PTV News. From there, he was ushered to his accommodations under royal protocol and received personally by his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim.
“I am extremely delighted to be in Malaysia; I express my gratitude to the prime minister of Malaysia for the warm reception,” Sharif said, as quoted by PTV News. “This visit will further strengthen Pakistan-Malaysia bilateral relations.”
The trip, which runs through Oct. 7, comes at a moment when both nations seek to expand trade amid global economic head winds and shared concerns over regional stability. Sharif had signaled his enthusiasm before departing Lahore on Friday. “I will be undertaking an official visit to Malaysia [from] October 5-7 on the invitation of my dear brother, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Greatly looking forward to a comprehensive exchange of views on our common desire to enhance trade and economic engagement as well as bilateral cooperation in various fields,” Sharif said in a X post.
As he boarded his flight, Sharif added that the talks would touch on “important global and regional matters,” underscoring the visit’s broader geopolitical weight.
The Pakistani delegation includes Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, several other federal ministers and senior government officials, the Foreign Office said in a statement ahead of the journey.
At the heart of the discussions will be efforts to ramp up collaboration across a slew of sectors, from trade and information technology to the halal industry, investment, education, energy, infrastructure, the digital economy and people-to-people exchanges. “The leaders are expected to witness the signing of agreements/MoUs for cooperation in several existing and new sectors,” the Foreign Office statement said. Such pacts would build on a relationship the statement described as a “strong and enduring strategic partnership … rooted in mutual respect, shared interests, and close cooperation across a wide range of sectors.”
Pakistan and Malaysia, both members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, have long nurtured deep economic, religious and cultural links. In April, Ibrahim highlighted the momentum in bilateral investment, telling reporters that Pakistan’s stake in Malaysia had climbed to about $397 million. That figure reflects a broader thaw in ties, even as both countries grapple with domestic pressures — Pakistan with its fragile economy and political turbulence, Malaysia with its own coalition government’s push for inclusive growth.
The visit also echoes recent diplomatic overtures on shared Islamic-world challenges. In May, Pakistan’s Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani pointed to the close collaboration between Islamabad and Kuala Lumpur in confronting issues like Islamophobia, a stance that has resonated amid rising global tensions.
Sharif’s itinerary, while not fully detailed publicly, is expected to include bilateral meetings with Ibrahim and possibly other Malaysian officials, alongside events to spotlight joint ventures. For Sharif, who assumed office in 2024 after a contentious election, the Malaysia stop offers a chance to project stability and attract investment back home, where slow growth and debt woes persist. Ibrahim, who has steered Malaysia through its own political ups and downs since taking power in late 2022, has prioritized Southeast Asian partnerships with Muslim-majority nations.
“Upon his departure, the prime minister said he was looking forward to a comprehensive exchange of views with his Malaysian counterpart on the ‘common desire’ of both sides to enhance trade and economic engagement,” PTV News reported.
