ISLAMABAD: The trade deficit expanded 4.2 percent to $5.44 billion in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25, driven by a 10 percent jump in imports, official data showed on Wednesday.

The country’s exports rose 14 percent to $7.88 billion during the July-September period, while imports climbed to $13.31 billion, data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed.

The trade deficit widened from $5.21 billion in the same period last year, as the country struggled to contain import growth.

In September, the trade deficit surged 20.35 percent year-on-year to $1.78 billion, with exports increasing 13.52 percent to $2.81 billion and imports jumping 16 percent to $4.59 billion.
