ISLAMABAD: In a move towards restoration of trade ties between archrivals, the federal cabinet has appointed Qamar Zaman as the trade and investment officer in New Delhi.
The move came at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif the other day, which approved the appointment of trade and investment officers in 15 foreign missions.
Qamar Zaman will be tasked with working closely with the Indian government for the restoration of trade ties between the two neighbors.
The post was held by Irfan Tarar Delhi before the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution by the Modi government in August 2019. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan Khan’s government did not send any trade and investment officer to New Delhi after the completion of Irfan Tarar’s term.
Qamar Zaman’s appointment as the trade and investment officer in New Delhi now shows that the incumbent government is looking to enhance bilateral trade ties with India among other countries.
At the meeting, the federal cabinet posted several other trade and investment officers including Koser Ali Zaidi to Kabul, Numan Aslam to Istanbul, Arooz Mehrish to Paris, Amna Naeem to Frankfurt, Quratulain Fatima to Los Angeles, Muhammad Bilal to Brussels, Seeren Asad to Doha, Zain Aziz to Dhaka, Fahd Raza to Geneva, Dr. Amir to Tehran, Ghulam Qadir to Bejing, and Abdul Majeed to Dushanbe.
