ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court on Wednesday granted protective bail to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan in the prohibited funding case.

The protective bail was granted to the former prime minister Khan in a case filed against him and his party leaders for allegedly submitting false affidavits to the election commission.

The bail was approved against the surety bonds worth Rs5,000 till October 18.

“The petitioner will be at liberty to deposit cash surety in the light of the police of the court. In the meanwhile, the petitioner may approach the court of learned special judge in order to avail remedies provided under the law,” the court order said.

It added that PTI chief was granted the exemption “subject to all legal and just exceptions”.

The Federal Investigation Agency filed the case against Khan and senior leaders of his party.

A first information report (FIR) in the case said Arif Masood Naqvi — the owner of the Wooton Cricket Limited — transferred ‘ill-gotten’ money to an account of United Bank Limited (UBL) registered under the name of the Khan’s party.

FIA has alleged that Naqvi’s Abraaj Group had transferred $210,000 to the PTI account in Islamabad. The party also received more financing from two bank accounts of Wotan Cricket Club.

It added that there were 12 currency transaction reports and suspicious transaction reports that had to be reported by the bank officials to the concerned authorities, but they failed to do so.

According to the FIR, leaders of the party had violated the Foreign Exchange Act and they were declared as beneficiaries of suspicious bank accounts.
